The Inspiration Behind Editorial Portraits!

Editorial portraits often have very creative concepts. I have often found myself wanting to shoot similar concepts. One thing about me though, I love being unique, so I will take my own spin on a photo. Well, where do you find editorial portrait inspiration? The answer is Pinterest! Throughout this article I’m going to show you examples of how I took inspiration from Pinterest and turned it into my own editorial portrait. Skip to the end to see my work!

Before creating an editorial image it’s important to note that a lot of editorial portraits contain some kind of prop. It is very likely that you will have to buy materials yourself. Some concepts can run very cheap while others can be very expensive.

The first example of images show a fun makeup idea I came across back in 2018! I loved this idea because it shows that even regular material like yarn can be used to make a great editorial portrait. This idea was shot outside in my backyard with a black sheet as a background. As you can see, you really don’t need any lighting equipment or crazy backdrops. This all together cost me about $5.

My second example is a shoot I did very recently, I came across an idea that I decided I waited to try out for an assignment. I actually ended up buying most of the materials for this shoot. I bought new shoes, socks, and 3 different types of flowers. In this case, the material cost me over $50 dollars. After shooting this though, I got many inquires. This just shows that time, money, and inspiration can pay off!

The third example is one of my favorite photos I’ve ever shot. One day I had gotten this idea for an editorial portrait, so I started looking up ideas on pinterest. This took some minor planning but honestly did not take much money. I had a blue paper backdrop already, so I asked my friend if we could shoot this in her backyard. (Surprisingly take a lot of pictures in backyards) I ended up buying two small cakes, a table cloth, sprinkles, boa, and confetti. This only cost me about $30

My last example is a basic, yet a compelling concept I wanted to capture with my sister. I am a photography student, so I had access to a lighting studio at my school recently. I had my sister where a black outfit and tada!! I did some dramatic lighting and It turned into one of my favorite photos. For me, this didn’t cost anything.

As you can see, editorial portraits can contain a variety of ideas. Nothing is limitless. I still have ideas to this day I am planning potraying in my editorial work in the near future.
